“I wanted to write joyful music that made other people feel good. Music that helps and heals, because I believe that music is God’s voice.”

Happy 70th birthday, Brian Douglas Wilson! — June 20, 1942

God only knows what we’d be without you.

I’d like to wish a happy birthday to a true musical genius. Brian’s talents gave us listeners the joy of entering a world of endless summer - he led the way in finding the “California Dream.” I applaud him for continuing on through those dark, hard times. I thank him for arranging such beautiful harmonies that still make me cry and for writing, producing, and singing those songs that I will always hold dear to my heart.
Thank you, Brian, for the music. :)

THIS DAY IN MUSIC…
1966, The Beach Boys released the album Pet Sounds in the US. The album is now regarded as the masterpiece of composer-producer Brian Wilson. To confirm this, Pet Sounds has been widely ranked as one of the most influential records ever released and has been ranked at No.1 in several music magazines lists of greatest albums of all time, including New Musical Express, The Times and Mojo Magazine. In 2003, it was ranked No.2 in Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, (Sgt. Pepper’s came first).

46 years ago today, one of the best albums of all time was released!! Let’s all celebrate Brian Wilson’s musical genius! :)

The Beach Boys - I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times

Sometimes I feel very sad.

This was the song planning while Roger was straight trippin’ on Mad Men Sunday night. It’s one of my favourite Beach Boys songs - so melancholic!

The lyrics were written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher about the ruminations on romance and the loss of innocence involved in growing up. Wilson stated in his autobiography that I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times was telling a self-portrait of his troubled psyche and that he was too advanced for his time. Wilson stated “It’s about a guy who was crying out because he thought he was too advanced, and that he’d eventually have to leave people behind.”

“I think Carl probably got the worst of it. Probably Carl and Dennis. Did I say worst? (laughs) The best of the worst or whatever. Because he would call Carl immediately. ‘Hey I got this idea, I need a guitar, come on I got something to work on.’ He was the guy that Brian would bounce his first seminal ideas onto, I think. Before he would approach the band with the full on thing.”
